  • Description: Although the 6000 series alloys have been industrially used in the extrusion industry for over 60 years, there is still some uncertainty regarding the selection, processing, and application of these alloys in accordance with end use. For example, the choice of alloy is often driven by designations or national standards rather than end product properties, sometimes resulting in inappropriate alloy selection and inefficient processing. From recent experience in the industry, processing conditions for the alloys tend to be conservative partly due to limited knowledge of the extrusion capability of the alloys. To address this situation, this article covers key aspects of the common 6000 series alloys from composition selection through processing, properties, and application. Preferred alloy options and processing conditions are highlighted, as are considerations for application of the alloys. This article provides a basis for realizing the full potential of the 6000 alloys in extruded applications.
