• Description: The primary aluminum smelting industry in Australasia is facing challenges due to high electricity costs and availability. This is compounded by a rapidly transforming electrical grid, which is becoming increasingly variable as renewable energy sources dominate and coal-fired baseload generation is phased out. This article discusses these challenges and notes that, in order to ensure the long-term viability of the industry, aluminum smelters will need to have a fundamental shift in how they operate, such as becoming a demand-side response provider for electrical companies.
