• Description: Quality of anodized aluminum, both mechanical and aesthetic, is affected by a number of parameters. Two parameters that have larger effects on finish and quality are anodize temperature and current density. This study shows that these parameters affect coating weight density, mechanical robustness (Michael-Clarke abrasion), electrolytic color tone, and even corrosion resistance. Using a well-established understanding of microstructural development of the anodic aluminum oxide film, this paper explains how and why these variations affect the resulting quality of the part. Control of just these two parameters goes a long way towards ensuring consistent results to meet specifications and customer requirements.
