• Description: A novel solution to the problem of forming age hardenable aluminum alloy extrusions in various hard tempers is retrogression heat treatment (RHT). This article presents the RHT process as a simple method for extruders and fabricators to achieving maximum formability of 6xxx and 7xxx extrusions and mill products, while maintaining high strength in the formed component. Joining and forming applications for which RHT would be beneficial are noted.
