•    Description:  The extrusion of aluminum machining chips is presented as an alternative to the conventional remelting approach in recycling of aluminum fine scrap. This article looks at a study on the extrusion of loose chips without consolidating them into a billet before the extrusion step, called the front-pad extrusion technique. Based on the performed experiment it was discovered that the required shear strain during hot extrusion is a key factor, and that the influence of billet density is negligible when required deformation conditions are met. Discussion about the necessary deformation conditions is also provided with a comparison of flat face, porthole, and ECAP dies.
