• Description: At the beginning of 2015, Alcoa introduced a new aluminum casting and rolling manufacturing technology, which is designed to produce the most advanced aluminum sheet on the market. Along with a process that provides dramatically reduced production times, reduced energy use, and flexibility in design and alloy use, the technology is said to make aluminum sheet with greatly improved formability and surface quality with increased strength. Development and commercialization of this new Micromill™ technology is progressing rapidly, with Alcoa already having signed an agreement with Ford for the supply of automotive aluminum and a licensing deal with Danieli Group for commercialization of the equipment. This article provides an overview of the Mircomill technology and the properties it provides for aluminum sheet products.
