•    Description:  The National Research Council of Canada (NRC) formed a new alliance in late 2014, the ALTec Industrial Research R&D Group. ALTec is an industrial R&D initiative housed within the NRC that has grown to have 18 members from across the globe. The initiative aims to bring Canadian aluminum industry and government partners together to tackle the challenges of aluminum parts manufacturing for the automotive industry. This article provides an overview of the ALTec initiative and presents information on its ongoing projects, which fall into the three technology areas — manufacturing of advanced aluminum components; assembly of aluminum and multi-material components; and durability, performance evaluation, and solutions.
