This article looks at the importance of etching to remove the disturbed layer (present on virtually all rolled aluminum surfaces) in order to ensure that the pretreatment of the sheet is successful. The deformed surface layer is examined, including deformed layer generation and how it is modified through hot rolling, cold rolling, grinding and polishing, and machining.
