Summary: CAST cooperative research center is a nonprofit virtual entity that aims to deliver new metals technology for the benefit of Australia. CAST works to bring together ressearch entities, universities, government agencies, and industry partners to work in collaboration to conduct industry driven research. This article presents a select few of the research projects conducted by the organization, including a laser assisted self piercing riveting technology developed by Swinburne University, Henrob, and Henkel; the development of new technologies for improving die casting and magnesium casting processes at the Future Manufacturing Flagship of CSIRO; and the implementation of CAST and CSIRO technologies at the Nissan Australia plant in Melbourne.
