Description: A momentous milestone was achieved on 12/12/2012, when Saudi Arabian Mining Company (Ma'aden) and Alcoa celebrated the pouring of first hot metal from their joint venture smelter project in Ras Al Khair on the east coast of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The 720-pot smelter will be the first step in the completion of the aluminum complex, which will also include an integrated rolling mill and alumina refinery in Ras Al Khair, as well as a bauxite mine in Al Ba'itha. This article looks at the ceremony for the first hot metal, as well as the goals of the project, the equipment and technology installed at the smelter, the creation of jobs in Saudi Arabia, and the future plans for the site.
