• Description: Due to the scale, complexity, cost, and dangers inherent in aluminum production and processing, the aluminum industry has been at the forefront of complex sensor development, the application of mathematical modeling, and automation. However, in the future automation will give way to Industry 4.0 technologies, with machines that operate with true autonomy, modifying their actions in response to feedback from sensors in real-time supporting the human operators of aluminum plants who will also be fully immersed in both the virtual and augmented physical reality of production and processing. This article presents an overview of the kinds of Industry 4.0 technologies becoming available, with a look at how they can be applied to aluminum manufacturing.
