This article gives an overview of a one-day workshop on automotive recycling technology held by the U.S. DOE, the Vehicle Recycling Partnership, and USCAR on September 24, 2008 in Southfield, MI. Presentations include a discussion of a roadmap for the understanding of lightweighting metals (aluminum and magnesium, as well as titanium and metal matrix composites), recycling for recovery while preserving material value, the importance of separating aluminum and magnesium recycling streams, the identification of areas for improvement in aluminum recycling, the complexities of magnesium recycling, and the fact that titanium auto applications are still limited.
