Summary: This article reviews testing methods for analyzing the quality and performance of anodized coatings on aluminum and its alloys, including standard methods for testing anodic coating thickness, coating weight/apparent density, sealing quality, color/lightfastness, and gloss. It also includes testing methods for determining anodic coating composition (i.e., energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopic ellipsometry, and Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy) and an introduction to nanotechnology concepts that utilize the morphology of anodized aluminum coatings. This is a companion article to "Engineering Properties of Anodic Coatings: Protecting Aluminum Alloys against Friction and Wear" (in the same issue).
