  • Description: The hot work tool steel H13 (or H-13) is a medium alloy, martensitic, air hardening, tool steel with composition limits based on the AISI/UNS (T20813) standard. As H13 is so widely used in aluminum high pressure die castings (HPDC) dies, which require a high die life to reach break-even costs, the North American Die Casting Association has specified compositions for both premium and superior grades of H13 in their steel acceptance criteria and permissible limits of micro-cleanliness. The aluminum extrusion industry also relies on H13 for the manufacture of its dies and tooling. This article aims to present fundamental metallurgical data on the heat treatment and properties of H13 steel, relative to its use in aluminum HPDC and extrusion dies and tooling, in order to examine where similarities exist and whether there are areas of applicable advantage to both industries.
