• Title: Technology Spotlight: Improved Method for Removing Sodium and Calcium from Molten Aluminum
• Volume: Vol. 73, No. 5
• Year: 2015
• No. Pages: 1
• Description: Spotlight looks at how Rio Tinto Alcan eliminated the use of chlorine through implementation of a new metal treatment process at its ISAL smelter in Straumsvík, Iceland. The process injects aluminum fluoride (AlF3) as a flux directly into a vortex generated in the molten aluminum by a rotor, releasing the aluminum from the aluminum fluoride. Test rigs were designed and fabricated by VHE, of Iceland, and erected at the old metal treatment station at ISAL, which was followed by a full scale rig.
